With November being the month of the running of the Melbourne Cup, this month’s theme is the Melbourne Cup. Did you know:

  • In 1861, the first Melbourne Cup attracted 4000 people, but within 20 years there were 100,000 people flocking to see the race.
  • In 1972 the race was altered to the metric distance of 3200m, 18.7m (or 61.5ft) short of two miles.
  • Kingston Rule holds the metric race record at 3:16.30.
  • In 1985 prize money for the cup was increased to AU$1 million. The owners of What A Nuisance received AU$650,000 and a AU$23,000 cup. Today the race is worth AU$2.7 million to the owners, along with a trophy valued at AU$80,500
  • The modern Cup field consists of 24 starters, and the most successful barrier to start from is Barrier 11, with six winners. Barrier 18 is the only one to have never produced a winner
