5. Fast Facts... |
- The idea of Daylight Savings Time was first put into practice by the German government during the First World War in 1916. The UK followed suit, also in 1916, starting about one month after the Germans.
- Australia adopted it in 1917 but it was so unpopular that it was discontinued the same year.
- It was then reintroduced again during World War II from 1942 to 1944 by the Federal Government, before a long lapse until 1967 when Tasmania introduced it again. NSW, Victoria and the ACT joined in 1971. Both Queensland and WA had brief stints at around the same time but soon abandoned it again due to its unpopularity.
- Currently, about 25 countries shift to daylight saving time every spring, and the next autumn, return to their standard time.
- Fire safety officials in Australia encourage people to use the two annual time changes as a reminder to check the batteries in their smoke detectors.
